This week in class we learned about BCEdAccess in class. They are a non profit that advocates for inclusive education. Kaori Lau and Neesha Blauberg came to speak to our class about the organization. They spoke about the role of technology in creating an inclusive classroom and supporting students with IEPs and struggles that have come up with the cellphone ban in BC and technology use being percieved as misuse. Lack of funding can be a barrier for students to have access to useful technologies. Early intervention is really important but it can be difficult to make happen, I have ADHD and I wasn’t diagnosed till the summer after graduating high school. I got diagnosed at the same time as my mom who was 46. I think it definitely makes it easier for me to connect and understand the experiences of students with ADHD. I think it makes me a lot more aware too because I was not disruptive or rowdy and my grades were fine so it didn’t seem like intervention was necessary but in retrospect, I think it would have been helpful BCEdAccesss have a parent facebook group of students with disabilities.
